The First Consultation
The large majority of my consults are for problem
behaviors (especially aggression). Thus, the initial consultation involves
gathering
information about
the dog, it's
environment
and routine, the problem,
and the
situation
in which the problem occurs. This
involves
a detailed interview that takes about 3-5
hours.
It is best done in the clients home with all
members of the family present. I will typically
ask various members of the family to interact
with the dog and will do so myself. I have two dogs
and may bring them to assess the behavior of your
dog toward them if that is the problem issue.
With problem behaviors, the approach taken is
twofold. First, we need
to manage the problem
to get it under control
immediately. This may require
alteration of the
procedures used for handling the dog
and
equipment such as leashes, collars, and/or
crates, etc. Second, we need to train the dog
to truly eliminate the problem so it will no longer
need to be managed. This can take weeks,
months,
or even years (depending on the nature of the issue).
In addition, sometimes a problem cannot be eliminated,
but can be markedly reduced.
During the later part of the consultation I will
verbally give advice on management and training.
This will be followed by a written report sent via
email or snail mail within 7 days.
Depending on your interest, additional consultations
involving follow-ups and/or additional instruction can
be arranged. Discounts for multiple consults paid in
advance are available. At this time, I do not board and
train dogs.
